JOB TITLE: Medical Science Liaison (MSL)
REPORTING TO: Vice President, Commercial Development
LOCATION: Broomfield, Colorado


Accera is a private biotechnology company engaged in the discovery and development of novel therapeutic products for neurodegenerative diseases.  We are developing a pipeline of preclinical and clinical drug candidates for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases. Accera’s pipeline is based on our proprietary neuronal energy metabolism platform. Our research department discovers, synthesizes and screens new chemical entities for therapeutic activity in metabolic pathways.

Position Overview:

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) will report directly to the Vice President of Commercial Development. The MSL will play a primary role in creating a competitive advantage to Accera customers by fostering a therapeutic environment which optimizes opportunities for present and future product offerings.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Provide peer- to- peer clinical, scientific communication that is fair balanced and accurate in representing data, complying with Accera’s policies on scientific communications.
    • MSL will collaborate with Clinical and R&D to ensure accuracy of data and scientific information. MSL will be certified for knowledge proficiency by Clinical and R&D prior to presenting data.
  • Respond to unsolicited requests for information in accordance with Accera’s policy/SOP on medical information requests. Responses must be fair balanced and consistent with response letters from Medical Information.
  • Establish ongoing relationships with national and regional investigators, speakers and opinion leaders to generate and maintain dialogs regarding perceptions on disease diagnosis and disease state management, competitive products and trial programs insight, potential product impact on patient outcomes, investigator initiated trials designs, changing diagnosis and treatment trends, emerging therapies and other information that will facilitate positive patient outcomes.
    • Targeted accounts will be based on physician’s clinical expertise in therapeutic areas, never on prescribing patterns. Interactions with health care professionals will conform to Accera Policies and Procedures.
  • Establish ongoing relationships with non-profit patient advocacy groups, academic clinical research organizations, medical congresses and associations.
  • Support Accera’s speaker bureau by active participation in speaker training and follow up. Responsibilities include identifying key speakers, providing them with requested up to date clinical data and information as well as reminding them of regulatory guidelines to follow when representing Accera as a contracted speaker, participating in slide review committees, reviewing , and evaluating speaker’s ability to meet contractual obligations.
  • Facilitate grant requests for investigator sponsored studies (ISS) that are consistent with Accera’s overall and clinical strategies. The MSL is expected to accurately represent Accera’s interest and the interest of the investigator.
  • Assist Clinical Operations in identifying potential study sites, recommend, develop and participate in programs to increase enrollment rates and timelines for Accera trials. MSL may pro-actively provide clinical trial summaries, educational presentations, and other relevant scientific communications to potential investigators.
  • Support at clinical and scientific symposia, including reporting on key presentations, abstracts, planning product clinical data presentations, and participating in Accera events
  • Support clinical / scientific training of field sales within the scope of sales training guidelines. Assist Sales and Marketing to develop and update training materials and programs related to target therapeutic area, disease state, scientific background, product knowledge. Collaborate with commercial colleagues to increase field knowledge of therapeutic market, emerging trends, clinical background and clinical issues related to on – label promotion. MSLs will abide by promotional guidelines when engaged in promotional types of activities, such as on-label presentations or meetings with field sales.
  • Support National Accounts by developing and presenting clinical information related to approved products and products in development. Presentations to formulary committees, medical directors, government and private carriers and distributors will focus only on clinical data. MSLs will not engage in discussions related to reimbursement, contracting or pricing.

Experience Requirements:
  • Requires a minimum of 3-5 years experience as an MSL or similar role in a biotech, pharmaceutical, medical device, or healthcare company.
Skill Requirements:
  • Ability to design, develop and manage the implementation of educational resources that support the marketing effort
  • In-depth knowledge of current clinical developments, clinical protocols, and appropriate therapeutic areas to enhance the marketing effort
  • Ability to interact on a peer-to peer basis with world-renowned experts in areas of therapeutic interest
  • Proficiency with data resources and their interpretation
  • In-depth knowledge of regulations and guidelines that apply to medical education
  • Ability to create and deliver effective educational programs for internal and external customers
  • Superior written and oral communication skills
  • Effective team building and teamwork skills at all functional levels
  • Ability to prioritize customer segments and resources, consistent with strategic marketing plans
Education (Minimum) Requirements:
  • Bachelors degree in Life Sciences required
  • Advanced degree preferred e.g., PhD, PharmD, RPh, or MBA/MS
