Alzheimer’s Disease
Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of
dementia, is a progressive and fatal disease. There
is no cure. In the US, 5.2 million people are living
with Alzheimer’s, and it has become the 6th leading
cause of death.
The disease attacks the brain's nerve cells, resulting
in loss of memory, thinking and language skills, and
behavioral changes. The cause of Alzheimer’s is unknown.
Risk factors such as increasing age and family history
contribute to the likelihood of developing the disease.
The direct and indirect costs of Alzheimer's and other
dementias amount to more than $148 billion each year.
Neither Medicare nor most private health insurance covers
the long-term care most patients need. Alzheimer’s is
costing U.S. business $61 billion/year, including $36.5
billion in caregiving, particularly lost productivity
from absenteeism in caregivers.
Axona: A new approach to the management of Alzheimer's disease
Axona® is a medical food indicated for the clinical dietary management of the metabolic processes associated with Alzheimer's disease. With simple administration and once-a-day convenience, Axona is complimentary to current therapies. In clinical trials, it has demonstrated immediate and sustainable improvements in cognitive function in mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's (as measured by the Assessment Scale-Cognitive or ADAS-Cog score).
With a novel mechanism-of-action, Axona offers a new approach to managing Alzheimer's. Axona addresses metabolic deficiencies by providing an alternative energy source for brain cells.
Axona is the first and only prescription product to safely meet the nutritional requirements of patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's. Clinical trials have shown Axona to be safe and effective in the dietary management of Alzheimer's. As with any medical food, Axona must be administered and supervised by a physician, and it is available by prescription only.
